CODEPINK and Global Exchange

 

Meet Medea Benjamin, author and American political activist and co-founder of the women-led peace group CODEPINK and the co-founder of the human rights group Global Exchange. She has been an advocate for social justice for more than 40 years. We’ll also discuss this past March 8th’s International Women’s Day event celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women. The theme was #BeBoldForChange. The earliest Women’s Day observance was held on February 28, 1909 in New York and organized by the Socialist Party of America.

Cancer Support Community Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara

Maria is the Community Liaison for Cancer Support Community Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara. She describes the March Events being held by the Cancer Support Community.  She’ll be talking about the “Dear Cancer, It’s Me” High School Essay Contest, the Wings of Hope Gala, as well as seeking donors, volunteers, sponsors and grants for the cancer support community. Promotional and advertising opportunities are available for donors and sponsors.  The CSCVVS holds support groups all over Ventura, Santa Barbara and the San Fernando Valley for participants, caregivers and the children of participants. Maria will be participating in free one-on-one counseling for the community.  On Tuesday 3-28 from 6:30-8:00 PM, the Community will be sponsoring a special presentation on ‘End of Life’ conversations and strategies.  Please see www.CancerSupportVVSB.org for further information.

Washington DC Admission Act

Our topics this week include the President’s first speech to Congress, the economy and the new bill for D.C. Statehood called the  ‘Washington, DC Admission Act’ introduced by Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and DC Council Chairman Phil Mendelson to make Washington, DC the 51st state.  The bill introduced in the 115th Congress will reflect the statehood efforts of the New Columbia Statehood Commission and the historic support of 85.6 percent of voters on the November ballot question. This is the first time that the bill will be called the “Washington, DC Admission Act” to reflect the new name selected by the DC Council.
