1. U.S. consumer sentiment rose in July to the highest level in six years as American felt better about the current economic climate, a survey reported that was released this morning. Anthony Weiner, Eliot Spitzer, San Diego Mayor Bob Filner all in the news with their antics. A letter released today from U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to his Russian counterpart assuring that Edward Snowden would not face the death penalty or be tortured if he is sent home.
2. Female Genital Mutilation, or cutting (FGM/C) was the subject of the largest report yet and was released this week by U.N. children’s agency UNICEF. The author of the report, Claudia Cappa visited with Maria to discuss what FGM/C is, the 29 countries that practice it and the more than 125 Million girls and women alive today that have undergone some form of the procedure. As many as 30 Million girls are at risk of being cut over the next decade if current trends persist. unicefusa.org. |
